Shopify checkout customization by plan is a page question, not an app-name question. Shopify’s help on checkout configurations documents app blocks on the thank-you page and the order-status page for the Basic plan and higher. The same help documents app blocks on the information, shipping, and payment steps, and checkout branding through the Branding API, as Shopify Plus.
A non-Plus store can install a checkout app and still be unable to place that app on the payment step. Checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions run in a checkout extensibility context, which Shopify’s checkout technologies overview describes as the current way apps participate in checkout. That context does not mean every plan can install every extension on every step. Open the checkout editor on your store and see whether the target is offered before you promise a payment-step change.
Three pages, two different permissions
Shoppers move through the checkout steps, then land on a thank-you page, and can return later to an order-status page. Those are different surfaces. An app block that Shopify allows after the order exists is not the same permission as an app block beside the payment methods.
This article does not invent a plan for every native control in the checkout editor. Logo, color, and policy settings that are not app blocks belong on Shopify’s own help page. Use that page for those controls. The rows below are only the app-block and Branding API split that help documents.
| Surface | What Shopify Help documents |
|---|---|
| Thank-you page app blocks | Basic and higher |
| Order-status page app blocks | Basic and higher |
| App blocks on information, shipping, and payment | Shopify Plus |
| Checkout branding through the Branding API | Shopify Plus |
Starter sits outside the “Basic and higher” row. Do not assume a Starter store can place thank-you or order-status app blocks. Confirm that plan in the editor as well.
What Basic and higher can add
On Basic and higher, the documented app-block targets are the pages after checkout completes: the thank-you page and the order-status page. A product offer, a short message, or another block that the app actually places on those pages can be a real project for a non-Plus store.
SK Checkout Customizer is free. The catalog does not gate its blocks behind an app price. The Squadkin checkout page says widgets can render on checkout, thank-you, and order status, and that customizing the checkout page itself uses checkout extensibility on Shopify Plus, while thank-you and order-status blocks are described there as available on all plans. Where that sentence is wider than Shopify Help, follow Help. “All plans” on an app page is not a substitute for the plan table.
The catalog’s thank-you upsell is one block that belongs on that later page. It recommends products from a collection or a manual list and leaves out items the shopper just bought. That is a post-purchase surface. It is not a payment-step checkbox.
What stays on Plus
App blocks on the information step, the shipping step, and the payment step are the Plus row in Shopify Help. A banner beside the card form, a gift-wrap checkbox under the cart lines, a custom field before the buyer pays, and a trust-badge row in checkout all depend on being allowed to place a block on that step. If the editor will not accept the block, the store’s plan is the reason, not a broken install.
Checkout branding through the Branding API is also documented as Plus. The Checkout Customizer catalog does not include a checkout branding editor. Do not treat the app as a way to recolor checkout on Basic. If a marketing card on the app page mentions branding, that card is not the catalog, and it is not Shopify’s plan table.
Extensions and functions are not a blanket permission
Checkout UI extensions draw the blocks. Shopify Functions run server-side rules, such as hiding a payment method or blocking a cart that misses a minimum. Both belong to checkout extensibility. The catalog ships 17 extension blocks and three functions, and it does not charge an app tier for them. Availability on a given Shopify plan is still Shopify’s rule. Do not read “the app is free” as “every plan can place every block.”
Payment and delivery functions are a different mechanism from a visual block, and validation is a different mechanism again. Even then, confirm the function in the checkout editor on your plan. This article does not promise that a function appears on Basic merely because it is not drawn as an app block.
Check the plan before you install
Write down the page you need before you open the App Store. If the job is a message or an offer after the order exists, Basic and higher is the documented path, and Starter still needs a check. If the job is anything on the information, shipping, or payment step, or a Branding API change, the documented path is Plus.
- Name the page. Thank-you, order status, or one of the checkout steps.
- Open the checkout editor. See whether that target accepts an app block on this store.
- Ignore app pricing as a plan substitute. SK Checkout Customizer has no paid tier. Shopify’s plan still decides the page.
- Leave native editor controls on the help page. Do not guess which plan unlocks each built-in setting.
Merchants in the US, UK, and Canada hit the same split. The plan names are Shopify’s, not a regional add-on.
Questions about checkout edits by plan
Can a Basic store add a banner on the payment step?
Shopify Help documents app blocks on the payment step as Plus. A Basic store should not plan on that placement. Thank-you and order-status app blocks are the Basic-and-higher row.
Is checkout branding included on Basic?
Checkout branding through the Branding API is documented as Plus. The Checkout Customizer catalog does not include a branding editor of its own.
Does a free checkout app bypass the Plus limit?
No. SK Checkout Customizer is free and does not add its own plan gate. Shopify still decides which page can host the block.
Read the page split on SK Checkout Customizer, then install SK Checkout Customizer only for a page your plan can actually edit.
