A simple WhatsApp button on Shopify is enough when the only thing you use is the link that opens a chat. It is the wrong swap when you still rely on an inbox, a bot, or a campaign tool. Cancel the larger platform only after you list the features people on your team opened in the last month.
WhatsApp Chat Button is a free click-to-chat widget. The catalog documents how the button looks, how the popup works, and how clicks are counted. It does not document a shared inbox, automated bots, or outbound campaigns. Those gaps decide whether a switch is honest.
List the features you actually use
Open the chat platform’s last 30 days before you compare apps. Write down what staff touched, not what the sales page advertises.
- A button or a link: shoppers start a WhatsApp chat from the storefront, and a person answers on a phone.
- An inbox: several agents read the same thread, assign it, or leave notes.
- A bot: an automated flow answers before a person does.
- Campaigns: you send broadcasts or scheduled messages from that platform.
If the list stops at the first line, you are paying for a suite and using a button. If any later line is real, keep the suite until you have another tool for that job. A free button does not absorb an inbox or a bot.
This article does not quote a platform price. Plans change, and a truncated listing is a bad source for a number. Read the invoice you already pay, then decide whether that amount matches the features on your list.
What the free button includes
The widget is a theme app embed. It renders in a shadow DOM, so theme CSS does not restyle the button and the button’s CSS does not restyle the theme. Clicking opens WhatsApp with a pre-filled message. The message can include the current page URL through a template variable.
You can run it as a popup, with a greeting and a text box, or as a direct link that skips the panel. Positions are the four corners of the lower and middle edges, with offsets. Sizes are small, medium, or large. The icon can be a round logo, a pill with text and an image, or a logo you upload. Colors, a pulse ring, and a custom CSS field are in the design settings.
The catalog also documents a greeting bubble, a floating label, and optional auto-open on a delay, on scroll, or on exit intent. Auto-open is optional. Leave it off if it covers the buy button. Each trigger can be set not to repeat in the same session.
Business hours use weekday open and close times and a timezone. Offline, the button dims and the popup text changes. The button stays on the page. Device rules and page rules decide where it appears. A GDPR checkbox can block Send and the agent links until the shopper agrees.
Several agents can appear as a chooser, each with a number, name, avatar, and greeting. That is still click-to-chat to those phones. It is not a shared desk. Extra rows for Telegram, Instagram, phone, or email can sit under the panel.
The greeting’s only documented variable is {{ current_page_url }}. Type a product name yourself if you need one. There is no product-title token, and there is no migration of the old platform’s settings. Recreate the number, the sentence, and the pages on purpose.
Analytics count clicks, popup opens, and send taps. Google Analytics and Meta Pixel events are optional. The free plan in the catalog includes these storefront controls. There is no second paid tier described for them.
What you give up
You give up anything the button app does not document. Chat history stored in the old platform does not move here, because this app does not store the transcript. Export that history before you cancel if you are required to keep it. New threads live on the WhatsApp number you set.
- There is no shared inbox, so two agents cannot work one transcript inside the app.
- There is no documented bot that answers product questions before a person does.
- There is no documented campaign or broadcast tool.
- There is no documented WhatsApp Business API connection.
- Click counts do not prove that someone replied or that the chat became an order.
If you need one of those, the simple button is a storefront shortcut, not a replacement. Keep the platform, or replace that one capability with a product that actually has it. Do not announce the switch to customers until the reply path is staffed.
Run a weekend test before you cancel
Install WhatsApp Chat Button beside the old widget for a short test, or hide the old widget on one theme duplicate if you do not want two buttons. Set one number, one greeting, and the pages where the button should show. Place a test order of questions from your own phone: a product question, an order number, and a message sent outside business hours.
Check three results. The chat opens on the phone you named. The offline text is accurate. The person who owns that phone can answer during the hours you published. If any of those fail, the platform is still doing a job the button has not taken over.
After the test, cancel only the platform features you did not use. If the invoice is a bundle, ask the vendor what remains when you drop the inbox. That answer belongs to their current terms, not to this article.
When to stay on the platform
Stay when agents share one queue, when a bot deflects repetitive questions, or when you send campaigns from that login. A quiet product page with a single button looks simpler, and it is simpler, but only for the click-to-chat job.
A simple WhatsApp button is the right downgrade when the suite has become an expensive link. It is the wrong downgrade when the suite is the place your team actually works. Match the bill to that fact, then keep or cancel.
Leave a note for the next person who pays the invoice
Write one sentence in your app list: what the button does, which phone answers, and which platform features you deliberately kept. The next person who reviews the bill should not have to rediscover that an inbox was still in use. A short note prevents a second, accidental cancellation.
Revisit the choice when the team grows. A single phone can become a queue. When that happens, the button can stay as the storefront entry and the new inbox can take the conversation, or you can move entirely. Do not treat today’s downgrade as a permanent architecture. Treat it as a match to the work you confirmed this month.
