A Shopify checkout gift message has to be typed before the shopper pays. After the order exists, the card is already written, the warehouse may already be picking, and a note on the thank-you page arrives too late to print inside the box. SK Checkout Customizer lets you add extra checkout fields, mark them required or optional, set your own labels, and save the answers as cart or order attributes.

The catalog does not ship a field named Gift message. You create the label yourself. The same is true of a delivery note or any other extra line. Checkout-step app blocks are a Plus placement in Shopify’s help on checkout configurations. A gift retailer on Basic can still want the note. The editor will not offer this field on the payment step unless the store is on Plus.

When the note has to be captured

Gift orders fail in a specific way. The buyer checks out, the recipient’s address is correct, and the packing slip or the handwritten card is blank because nobody asked for a message. Emailing the buyer the next morning is a second task your team will miss on a busy week.

Collect the message while the buyer is still in checkout, on the same order that fulfillment will open. Cart and order attributes are how Shopify keeps that extra text on the order. Staff can read the attribute in the order admin. That is the handoff the catalog documents. It does not document a direct print onto a packing slip, a gift card PDF, or a warehouse app.

Plus is the placement, and the field name is yours

Checkout UI extensions draw these fields inside checkout extensibility. Shopify Help puts app blocks on the information, shipping, and payment steps on Plus. Confirm the field appears in the checkout editor on your Plus store before you announce it. The app is free, with no separate charge for custom fields. Free does not move the field onto a non-Plus payment step.

Create the field with a label shoppers understand. “Gift message” is a label you type. “Note for the recipient” is another. You can add a delivery instruction the same way, such as “Leave with the doorman,” if that is a second attribute you need. Mark the gift message required only when an order without it cannot ship. Mark it optional when many buyers are purchasing for themselves.

  • Custom label: there is no built-in Gift message field to switch on.
  • Required or optional: you choose, per field.
  • Saved as an attribute: the answer is stored as a cart or order attribute.
  • More than one field: a gift message and a delivery note can be two labels, not one overloaded box.

What fulfillment still does by hand

An attribute on the order is a sentence in the admin. Someone still has to copy it onto the card, or your packing-slip template has to be built to read that attribute. The Checkout Customizer catalog does not include that template. Before a holiday weekend, place a test order, open it in Shopify admin, and walk the attribute to the bench. If the bench cannot see it, the field is not finished.

Keep the message short enough to fit the card you actually use. The catalog does not publish a character limit. If your card holds four lines, say so in the field label. A novel in the attribute will be truncated by your printer, not by a rule this article can invent.

US, UK, and Canadian gift shops have the same operational gap. The recipient should not see prices if that is your policy, and the message field does not hide prices by itself. Price hiding is a different product. This field only stores the note.

Open the finished test order and find the attribute before you train the team. Shopify shows additional details and notes in the order admin. The exact panel can move as Shopify updates the admin, so the training step is “open this test order and read the gift line,” not a screenshot from a blog. If the attribute is easy to miss, add the field label in your packing checklist by name. A second optional field for a delivery note should use a different label, so “happy birthday” never lands in the courier instruction and “leave at the side door” never gets printed on the card.

Empty test checkouts matter too. Place one order with the optional message left blank and confirm the order still completes. Place one with the field required and confirm checkout will not finish until the box has text. That pair tells you the required flag is live. A holiday rush is the wrong time to discover the flag was never saved.

The order-status page is the wrong moment

Thank-you and order-status app blocks are documented on Basic and higher. They are the right place for a product offer after payment. They are the wrong place for a gift message that had to ride along with the original order. By the time the shopper sees “thank you,” the order is already created. A box on that page can collect a comment for a later email. It cannot rewind the shipment.

If the store is not on Plus, say that plainly. Options that remain are a note the theme collects in the cart, before checkout, or a process where support adds the message by editing the order. This app’s checkout field is not available on that earlier cart drawer. Do not describe the thank-you page as a substitute for a pre-payment gift message.

Questions about checkout gift messages

Does the app include a Gift message field?

No. You define the label. The answer is saved as a cart or order attribute. Tax ID is the same kind of blank label, not a built-in field.

Can the note be printed on a packing slip?

The catalog stores the attribute on the order. It does not document packing-slip or gift-card printing. Your slip template or your team still has to read the attribute.

Can I require the message?

Yes. Each field can be required or optional. Require it only when you will not ship without it.

Add the label on a Plus checkout from SK Checkout Customizer, then read it on a test order. The app is SK Checkout Customizer.
